Cordyceps: Effects & Uses of the Caterpillar Fungus

What can this valuable medicinal mushroom from the Himalayas really do? We'll show you the traditional effects of Cordyceps, the current state of research, and what you should pay attention to when taking it. Nothing will stand in the way of your renewed focus!

Cordyceps and its effects – here you'll find everything you need to know.

A medicinal mushroom like no other. Cordyceps sinensis (caterpillar fungus) is said to have many different effects on the body and mind. In traditional Chinese medicine, this medicinal mushroom has been used for centuries to enhance performance and improve health. But what does modern science say about this medicinal mushroom? We've examined current studies and compared them with traditional uses. Here are our sometimes surprising findings:

Cordyceps for mental performance enhancement and in sports

Cordyceps first gained international attention in the sports world in 1992 when highly successful Chinese Olympic athletes reported using the mushroom. Since then, several human studies have shown that this medicinal mushroom can increase oxygen uptake, endurance, and physical performance. Cordyceps is also said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The mushroom contains numerous antioxidants that can neutralize free radicals, thus reducing inflammation after physical exertion. A third point of interest for athletes is that studies suggest Cordyceps increases the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). This serves as the primary energy source for cells, including muscles.

Since cordyceps promises improved athletic performance, it's no surprise that it's now being marketed as a diet product. Whether there's actually a connection between cordyceps, being overweight, and weight loss is currently unknown. However, it seems logical, as increased endurance and improved athletic performance can lead to burning more calories. Crucially, though, you have to be active to achieve this. The medicinal mushroom won't help you lose weight on its own without exercise.

All these effects during exercise could also explain the concentration-enhancing effect of cordyceps. Many students in Asia who take cordyceps report better results at university. Even though there are hardly any studies on this, this effect seems plausible, since the brain can function optimally and achieve excellent performance with a good oxygen supply.

The effects of Cordyceps: psyche

Medicinal mushrooms have long been used in Asia as a complementary therapy to conventional medicine for depression, as they are believed to have a balancing effect on the psyche. Cordyceps, in particular, and occasionally Reishi and Hericium, are used to supplement treatment. Cordyceps is said to have several effects on the psyche. On the one hand, the mushroom is believed to generally strengthen the body. On the other hand, it is thought to promote hormonal balance. A hormonal imbalance can be one of many causes of depression.

A Chinese research team has already demonstrated initial findings in this area. They induced depressive moods in mice through stress. Some of the mice were then treated with cordycepin, a bioactive compound from Cordyceps. And indeed, the researchers observed positive effects compared to the control group. For example, inflammation in the hippocampus (a brain region) was reduced, and a specific protein called BDNF increased in the brain. An imbalance of BDNF can lead to depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or Alzheimer's disease.

The effects of cordyceps on kidney disease

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the use of Cordyceps for kidney diseases is very popular. This application is also being explored in research. More than 22 studies on kidney diseases and Cordyceps already exist. People with chronic kidney disease could indeed benefit from the effects of Cordyceps extract. So far, it has been shown that serum creatinine levels are reduced, creatinine clearance is increased, and less protein is excreted in the urine. However, it must be noted that some of these studies were poorly conducted, and therefore a possible bias in the results cannot be ruled out. Thus, further high-quality studies are needed before Cordyceps can be used in the treatment of kidney diseases.

However, even now, there are effects of the medicinal mushroom that could help prevent kidney damage. Cordyceps is said to have antidiabetic and blood pressure-lowering effects. Both diabetes and high blood pressure are diseases that can damage the kidneys in the long term. Therefore, preventing them is an effective way to protect the kidneys. There are already several scientific studies specifically regarding diabetes and Cordyceps. In some cases, not only were positive effects observed, but the underlying molecular processes were also elucidated, thus answering the question "How does Cordyceps work in connection with diabetes?" However, caution is advised: if you are already taking medication for diabetes, interactions with the medicinal mushroom are possible. Therefore, discuss taking Cordyceps with your doctor.

Cordyceps' effect on the lungs

A traditional application of Cordyceps is in the treatment of lung diseases. A Chinese research group has also investigated this potential effect in more detail and arrived at the following conclusions: The medicinal mushroom possesses anti-inflammatory potential. This means it can protect the body, whether in the lungs or other organs, from inflammation. Asthma is a lung disease in which the bronchi are chronically inflamed. In the Chinese study, asthma patients were therefore divided into a treatment group and a control group. After two months, the values of several biomarkers indicative of airway inflammation improved in the treatment group. For example, the level of IgE decreased. This is an antibody that plays a key role in allergic reactions, but also in allergic asthma. The improved values suggest an anti-inflammatory effect of Cordyceps in asthma. Further research is needed to verify the effectiveness of this medicinal mushroom in other lung diseases.

The effect on the immune system

Our immune system is a complex, diverse, and vital system that protects us from pollutants, pathogens, and even disease-causing cell changes like cancer. Strengthening it is therefore both sensible and desirable. In addition to a healthy diet, exercise, and sufficient sleep, medicinal mushrooms are increasingly being touted as a helpful tip. And indeed, the effects of various mushrooms on the immune system have already been demonstrated. For example, Cordyceps is an immunomodulator. This means that its active ingredients can both enhance and weaken the immune response. Depending on the situation, either can be beneficial. When a pathogen attacks the body, a strong immune response is essential.

In autoimmune diseases, however, the immune system overreacts and needs to be suppressed. In such cases, weakening the immune response is beneficial. Scientists have already utilized this effect in animals after organ transplantation. Administering Cordyceps prevented the transplant from being rejected and extended the animals' lifespan. To date, all studies on the effects of Cordyceps on the immune system have only been conducted in cell culture experiments or animal models. Whether these findings translate to humans remains to be seen. However, it is highly likely that Cordyceps also acts as an immunomodulator in humans and can therefore support our vital immune system.

Cordyceps and libido in men and women

Traditionally, Cordyceps has been used to enhance male potency. Some websites even portray this medicinal mushroom as a miracle cure for libido. Therefore, researchers have investigated the effects of Cordyceps more closely. In animal studies, the administration of Cordyceps militaris (a subspecies of Cordyceps) increased both sperm quality and quantity. Effective, long-term potency enhancers increase testosterone levels. This was also observed with Cordyceps: testosterone levels rose, which can lead to increased libido. Furthermore, the percentage of motile sperm increases. Another study has provided initial insights into the effects of Cordyceps sinensis in this area. In mice, the so-called Leydig cells, which are responsible for testosterone production in the testes, were stimulated. The scientists conclude that this suggests a functional improvement in male reproduction.

As you've probably noticed, the findings in this area haven't yet been tested on humans. Therefore, no definitive statements can be made about Cordyceps and libido in humans, and if any exist, they would only apply to men. Whether Cordyceps has any effects on women is simply not sufficiently researched. Furthermore, it's also unclear whether Cordyceps has a positive effect during menopause, when hormonal changes can lower libido.

Cordyceps for hair loss

Hair loss doesn't just affect men and can have various causes. Genetic factors, autoimmune reactions, thyroid disorders, and more can contribute to hair loss. It's not always easy to stop. However, dietary supplements can help. For example, they can ensure an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals for healthy hair. The effects of Cordyceps on hair are also discussed in relation to hair loss. If it's triggered by an autoimmune reaction, the fungus's immunomodulatory properties could have a positive influence, but there are no studies on this. So far, only a positive effect on hair growth in mice has been observed with a mixture of various medicinal plants, including Cordyceps. Whether this also occurs in humans with the sole use of Cordyceps is questionable. Therefore, with current knowledge, a positive effect of Cordyceps on hair cannot be confirmed.

Cordyceps side effects

Before you decide to buy medicinal mushrooms, you should always inform yourself about possible side effects and interactions. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it's without unwanted effects. No side effects have been reported with the use of Cordyceps so far. However, interactions with medications are possible. If you are taking antibiotics, blood thinners, or medication for diabetes, Cordyceps can intensify their effects. Therefore, you should avoid taking them at the same time or consult your doctor. The fact that foods can interact with medications is not unusual, but it's not widely known. For example, some citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, can affect birth control pills or blood pressure medications.

Even though the medicinal mushroom itself has no known side effects, you should still prioritize high quality when buying Cordyceps products, as mushrooms act like natural filters. They can absorb pesticides, radiation, and heavy metals. For a safe and effective Cordyceps experience, you should therefore only purchase tested products with transparent origins. You can identify these by looking for specific quality standards such as GMP, NSF, or testing for contaminants by an independent laboratory. Cultivation and production in Germany or the EU is also an indicator of high quality, as hygiene protocols like HACCP must be followed in Germany.

Fun fact: Anyone familiar with the popular video game "The Last of Us" has probably heard of Cordyceps, as the fungus infects not only caterpillars but also humans in the game, taking control of their brains and bodies. However, you don't need to worry about this "side effect," as it's pure fiction. In reality, the fungus actually offers health benefits for brainpower and performance.

The story of the caterpillar fungus?

The effects of Cordyceps were discovered centuries ago, rather by chance, by herders in the Himalayan region. The fungus grows there, infecting a specific caterpillar and parasitizing it. According to local accounts, the herders noticed that their animals became stronger and more resilient when they grazed on pastures where Cordyceps was present. The livestock became more fertile and also survived the winter better. Based on these observations, people also used Cordyceps to boost their vitality, and the medicinal mushroom quickly became an integral part of traditional medicine. It's important to understand that the people of Tibet, and indeed the entire Himalayan region, had very limited access to medicine. For a long time, the use of local medicinal plants ensured their health, and this practice continues to play a vital role today.

Cordyceps Himalaya

Cordyceps reached Europe via traditional Chinese medicine. Internationally, this medicinal mushroom has attracted interest and is the subject of ongoing research. The more studies published on the effects of Cordyceps, the more popular the mushroom becomes, as some of its traditional uses stand up to scrutiny. As early as 1964, the state of research in China was sufficient for physicians to include the medicinal mushroom in their official list of herbal remedies, and since 2004, Cordyceps capsules have been a standard treatment in Chinese clinics. Researchers have now thoroughly analyzed the mushroom and identified its constituents, which are likely responsible for a large portion of its effects: cordycepin (an antimetabolite), adenosine, polysaccharides, sterols, various proteins, vitamins, and more.

Incidentally, the mushroom is now also available in a vegan version. Modern cultivation methods allow the use of a plant-based substrate instead of caterpillars. Dietary supplements available in this country usually contain cultivated Cordyceps mushrooms, as they are now extremely rare in the wild and therefore highly valuable and expensive (up to €50,000 per kilogram). For us, the long history of Cordyceps demonstrates how well traditional medicine fits into the modern world and, at the same time, how important current research is for reinforcing its applications.

Cordyceps achieves its ideal effect with the correct dosage and well-designed products.

Cordyceps isn't always the same. There are more than 350 different species of this fungus. Whether they all have the same effects is not fully understood. Most scientific studies focus on the effects of Cordyceps sinensis. When buying a product containing this medicinal mushroom, you should therefore carefully check the ingredient list and verify that it actually contains the effective Cordyceps strain and not other Chinese mushrooms. Occasionally, you will also find the designation Cordyceps CS-4 on packaging. This also refers to Cordyceps sinensis in its cultivated form. Cordyceps products are generally available in various forms. Capsules, tablets, powders, liquid extracts, and fortified foods are common. These differ in several aspects. For example, liquid extracts can have a significantly higher concentration of active ingredients and greater bioavailability.

The correct dosage

But what is the optimal dosage of Cordyceps sinensis? This question isn't so easy to answer, as the required dose can vary depending on the intended use. In animal studies, the dosage is usually between 10 and 50 mg per kg of body weight. However, this likely cannot be directly applied to humans. Currently, it is assumed that effects become noticeable in humans starting at around 250 mg. Amounts of 3-4 g per day are also considered safe and can produce a stronger effect from Cordyceps. It's important to note that extracts have a significantly higher concentration of active ingredients than powders. The question "how quickly does Cordyceps work?" is also frequently discussed in this context. And here, too, the answer is not clear-cut. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many users feel the effects of Cordyceps after just a few hours. In contrast, studies have observed performance-enhancing effects after about 6 weeks. In some cases, however, the effect is more subtle and not immediately noticeable, similar to caffeine.

Which product is the right one?

With this background knowledge, you should choose your product and use Cordyceps with realistic expectations. Most capsules and tablets contain only very small amounts of the active ingredient, and you would have to take a large number of them to notice any effect. Our smaints liquid extract , for example, offers significantly more benefits, as it is obtained through dual extraction. This process extracts both the fat-soluble and water-soluble components of the mushroom, making optimal effectiveness possible in the first place. In our liquid extract, we have combined the benefits of two medicinal mushrooms. In addition to Cordyceps, it also contains Hericium , which can support the growth of brain cells. Ideal for a focused start to the day! You can see all the benefits in the following overview:
